Biloxi officials considering charter boat ordinance

Posted: Updated:

Biloxi City Council members are considering an ordinance that would ban charter boat operations from the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor for anyone who does not rent an authorized boat slip at the harbor.

The proposed ordinance says allowing charter businesses from outside the harbor to come in and pick up customers diminishes the value of the boat slips for those charter vessels that pay to make the harbor their home. Even worse, it might be putting the city in violation of a federal covenant that limits the amount of charter boats that can operate out of the harbor.

The city will discuss the ordinance during Tuesday's council meeting. Councilman George Lawrence says the council is expected to vote on the ordinance in the first week of June.
