HOLMES COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It was a holiday barbeque that turned deadly in Holmes County.

A department of corrections warden was shot and killed Saturday by her nephew according to Holmes County deputies.

Sheriff Willie March said  gunfire erupted at a family gathering around 11:40 p.m. Saturday night in the 2 thousand block Queenie Johnson Road.

Fay Ann Noel, 58, was struck in the chest with a .20 gauge shotgun.

Police said according to family members her nephew, 25-year-old Kenneth Lee Williams, fired the fatal shot.

"The nephew got to arguing with his uncle and things just got out of control," said Captain Chambers with the Holmes County Sheriff Department. "The argument stemmed from taking a baby to the doctor."

Noel was pronounced dead at University Hospital in Lexington.

"His mind (Williams) wasn't where it was suppose to be, I tell you the truth and he was on medication," said Louethel Noel, the victim's mother. "Something just triggered him."

March said Williams fled the scene, but was later arrested at the hospital when he was brought there by a relative for treatment. Family members say he had a mental disorder and hadn't taken his medication.

Sheriff March said Noel worked for the Department of Corrections for about 25 years.

"She was a nice, beautiful lady, loved to help people," said her mother. "She loved her job and would do anything for her daughter."

Police charged Williams with murder. Investigators haven't interviewed Williams yet because he was heavily medicated at the hospital. The case is still under investigation.

"Everybody that's around her she created them so well if you would have met her you would have never forgot her and she loved her children," said Ann Noel, the victim's sister.
