Jason Conner named MGCCC women's head basketball coach

PERKINSTON, MS (WLOX) - Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Vice President and Dean of Athletics Ladd Taylor announced today that Jason Conner has been hired as the women's head basketball coach.

Conner brings more than 25 years of coaching experience to Perkinston. He spent six years as the men's basketball coach at Delta State University where he posted a 95-73 record, a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and five trips to the Gulf South Conference Tournament.

"I'm excited about his enthusiasm," Taylor said. "It's something that really caught me about him. He's looking forward to getting in here, getting the ground running and moving the program in the right direction."

Conner guided Belhaven's basketball program from 1993-97 and was an assistant coach for men's and women's teams at Delta State, South Alabama, Houston and Texas-El Paso.

"This is a tremendous opportunity," Conner said. "I hope to create a winning culture for this program and make a positive impact on the lives of our players."

Conner's players at Delta State had a 100% graduation rate and three of his six teams were nationally ranked.

"We've got a lot of ground to make up in recruiting," Conner said. "We'll have our ups-and-downs with getting players, but the main thing we want is a group of leaders. You have to have leaders on and off the floor."

Conner is a native of Lakeland, Florida.
