Marine patrol urges boaters to exercise caution on waterways

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

Memorial Day weekend will be a busy time on the water in South Mississippi. The holiday weekend that signals the unofficial start to summer is also a busy time for boating.

Many fishermen and families will take boat trips on the Mississippi Sound, with many heading to the barrier islands. Marine patrol officers will also be out in full force this weekend. Those who enforce the laws on the water are urging boaters to stay safe this summer.

"Before you go on the water, please check your boat. Make sure everything is in working order, that you have all of your personal safety gear that you are required to have," said DMR Marine Patrol Chief Rusty Pittman. "We will have all officers working this weekend. We will have plenty of coverage throughout the three coastal counties."
