Ocean Springs educator selected for prestigious teaching program

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - An Ocean Springs teacher will get to attend a prestigious program linked to PGA golfer Phil Mickelson. Allison Yarrow is one of the 150 third through fifth grade teachers who have been selected to attend the Mickelson Exxon-Mobile Teachers Academy in New Jersey. More than 1,100 teachers from across the country applied for the program.

Yarrow is a gifted teacher at Ocean Springs Upper Elementary. She will spend a week learning new lessons to ignite an interest among students in science, technology, engineering and math or STEM subjects.

"I'm always looking for something new and something different, because the kids need to focus on real life experiences," said Yarrow. "A lot of what I do, by doing hands-on, they're doing, they're seeing, they're learning, they're experimenting, some things work, some things don't, and to me that's a big part of their education."

Yarrow will attend the academy in July. Teachers were chosen based on their qualifications, dedication to inspiring students and their overall commitment to enhancing the teaching profession.
