NOPD searching for individuals involved in Canal St. fight, shooting

New Orleans Police Department Detectives are looking for individuals who participated in a fight that occurred just prior to a shooting on Canal Street.

According to police, detectives working the case learned that a message was sent out on social media websites, promoting a Saturday get together on Canal Street. The message read "CANAL DAY 4pm-untill, Saturday May 17,2014".

Around 7:00 p.m., a fight broke out inside of a McDonald's in the 700 block of Canal Street. As restaurant workers broke up the fight they told all of the those involved to leave the restaurant. Once outside the individuals began fighting again.

Witnesses told police that during the fight, a man pulled out a handgun and began firing. A nearby 18-year-old woman was hit by a bullet, receiving a graze wound to the back of her right leg.

Detectives were able to obtain a photograph of one of the individuals involved in the fight and cell phone video footage of the fight, which was uploaded to social media websites.
