RVA teachers on middle school: 'It's not safe'

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Teachers at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School say they are scared for their lives in their own classrooms.

They say they are being threatened by students, and they claim the administration is turning a blind eye. Teachers wrote us a two-page email detailing their concerns. They claim students are coming and going as they please, and students are allegedly bullying other students and teachers.

"It's not safe," said a MLK Middle School teacher who did not want to be identified. "It's not safe for the students. It's not safe for the staff."

A group of them penned an extensive email detailing their alleged treatment.

"We come every day to a hostile environment," said the teacher. "The message is we need something to be done. We cannot go on with the status quo."

The teacher says even attempting to write up students leads to threats from the teens.

"Snitches get stitches threats," said the teacher. "I'm going to slap you, or I'm going to hit you, or I can't wait to fight you."

We took these concerns to school board vice chair Kristen Larson.

"I think we are all very aware of the challenges and we are making some changes to get some more supports in place," said Larson. "You can't get a letter like this and just ignore it. That's not what the school board is doing."

Teachers are pushing for immediate action.

"We really can't teach until the behavior issues are controlled," said the teacher.

The teachers claim, "the administration made a rule that prevents students from being removed from class, no matter how disruptive or disrespectful the students may be."

The school promises to give NBC12 an update this week. We will keep you posted.
