LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The Homes for Heroes Program announced a special tribute to a fallen soldier Wednesday. The family of Sergeant Houston Taylor will receive a new, mortgage-free home.

Houston died in 2011 while serving in Afghanistan. He left behind his wife Kelsey and their two children. Kelsey says it was Houston's dream to move to Lubbock to raise his family.

"We had family living here, so we were up here all the time from Ft. Worth, and he always wanted to move up here. Afterwards I decided I wanted to move up here. I love it," Kelsey said.

Kelsey says the home came as a complete surprise, and she's so grateful, because it will give her the opportunity to go to school without having to worry about a home payment.

Lubbock Homes for Heroes is done in partnership with the West Texas Home Builders Association. The new heroes' home located near 134th and Memphis is already under construction thanks to a lot generously donated by Rex Robertson of Ford Development, the developer of Kelsey Park.

The hero home is being built and donated by local vendors, tradesmen and builders of the West Texas Home Builders Association.

This is the first time the program has awarded a home to the family of a fallen veteran. The past three homes have been awarded to veterans who were injured while serving.

George McMahan, President of the Lubbock Homes for Heroes says they are always accepting donations. They can be made at their office, located at 4223 85th Street. Builders can also donate their services.
