Frankston ISD holds inaugural special education field day

FRANKSTON, TX (KLTV) - When you look from a distance, it seems like an ordinary day at Frankston High School. A closer glance reveals over 70 special needs kids participating in their very own field day.

"I'm super proud of our school," Frankston ISD coach Marc Chitty said. "I'm super proud of our kids for stepping up and doing this with these special needs kids." Frankston ISD senior Justice Bean who volunteered added, "We are just doing our best to give them the time because its all about them."

Six schools were represented in the inaugural Anderson County Special Education Co-Op Field Day. While its all about the athletes, it took a team effort.

"I don't know who is more excited the kids, parents, or teachers," Debbie Gazaway the director of the Anderson County Special Education Co-Op said. "The teachers are just ecstatic, they are having more fun than the kids are" Frankston ISD sophomore volunteer Amber Brown added, "Me and my partner, we had a lot of fun. He was active and ready to race."

Competing for the first time ever, every athlete finished with a gold medal and memory of a lifetime.
"I've probably given 750 high fives, its just amazing to see the smiles on these kids faces and what a great time they are having," Bean said.
Chitty added, "They are loving life right now and that's what its about. If they leave here with a smile then we have done our job."

Legendary coach Vince Lombardi once said, "Once you quit, it becomes a habit." Well on a day where coming in first or last doesn't matter, crossing the finish the line has never meant so much.
