LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The use of e-cigarettes in Tennessee Valley jails are helping to ease tensions. So far, jails in Franklin, Lauderdale and Lawrence Counties in Alabama, along with Wayne County TN, are seeing changes within their facilities after allowing their use.

Authorities report a definite decrease in tensions and contraband violations with the added use of e-cigarettes inside their jails.

Lauderdale County Jail is starting their second week on the program. It's been 60 days in Franklin County; Wayne County TN has allowed the devices since October.

Officials said each e-cigarette is equal to about 2.5 packs of standard cigarettes and can be purchased in their commissaries. Sheriff Shannon Oliver said the use of e-cigs has cut back on inmates trying to sneak smokes in. He said they'll continue to allow them as long as they don't cause any problems.

In the two weeks since their introduction, Lauderdale County Jail officials said they have sold an estimated 122 e-cigarettes.
