NEW YORK, May 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Standard & Poor's Ratings Services announced today the appointment of Joaquin A. Cottani as Chief Economist for Latin America.  Based in New York, Mr. Cottani reports to Paul Sheard, Chief Global Economist and Head of Global Economics and Research and has a reporting line into Jane Eddy, Managing Director and Head of Latin America.

"Joaquin's strong academic, policy, and markets background, along with his extensive experience in the Latin America region, make him an ideal addition to our global economics and research team," Mr. Sheard said.  "We are thrilled that he is coming aboard."

Before joining Standard & Poor's, Mr. Cottani was with GlobalSource Partners as Local Partner for Argentina, producing commentaries and reports on economic developments in the country.  He also served as Chief Latin American Economist for Citigroup Global Markets in New York, where he managed a team of economists who developed macroeconomic research and forecasts for 15 countries, and authored research and thought leadership pieces on monetary, fiscal and exchange rate policies in the region. 

Mr. Cottani's experience also includes positions at The World Bank, Lehman Brothers, and the Ministries of Economy and of Finance of Argentina. He has taught at New York University's Stern School of Business, the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba in Argentina, and Yale College.  He has written and co-authored many articles and papers in academic and industry journals.

Mr. Cottani has Ph.D., M.Sc. and M.A. degrees in Economics from Yale University, and has a Licenciado en Economia degree from the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba in Argentina. He was recognized as a Global Leader of Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum and received a graduate fellowship from the Organization of American States.
