MS Wildlife Officer struck by vehicle and killed

Posted: Updated:

Mississippi's wildlife agency has confirmed the recent death of an officer.

The agency said a wildlife officer looking for a possible trespasser near Fulton was hit and killed by a car.

Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks spokesman Jim Walker said 56-year-old Master Sgt. John Collum, of Fulton, had worked for the department since 1999, and was Regional Officer of the Year in 2012.

Walker said the accident does not appear related to the call that Collum was investigating late Friday.

Itawamba County Sheriff Chris Dickinson said the car skidded 300 feet after hitting Collum.

Dickinson said the 19-year-old driver remained at the scene and is in custody, but has not yet been charged.

Walker said Collum is survived by his wife, two sons and four grandchildren.
