PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

The Friendly City Saturday said a special thank you to the men and women who serve in the Nation's armed forces. Petal hosted the 6th annual Military Appreciation Day at Hinton Park.

Mayor Hal Marx recognized current service personnel, while families enjoyed free hamburgers, hot dogs and displays of military vehicles and weapons.

"It's different from Veterans Day that honors people that have served, and of course Memorial Day is for those who've given their lives, but this is a special day for those who are currently serving and we're proud to be able to put it on," said Marx.

Also during the event, former Petal High School graduate Colby Hipps received his official appointment to the Air Force Academy.

"I took a tour (of the academy) last weekend, so the anxiety and the fear of the unknown is gone, so now it's more about I'm ready to be there and ready to get things started," he said.

Hipps is one of only two Petal students in the last 20 years to receive an appointment to that institution.
