Baseball player from Rankin County wins state award in Florida

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Daniel Sweet of Rankin County has received the "State Player of the Year" award in the Florida College System Activities Association. Sweet batted over .400 for the season, leading his Polk College Eagles to a 36-12 record.

Sweet is the son of Attorney Dennis Sweet and Kimberly Noel Sweet. He played his high school ball at Northwest Rankin.

He received the award on the eve of the Region VIII State Tournament, which got underway Friday morning. Polk won the opening game 5-1 over Palm Beach State. Sweet had an RBI single in the 5th.
