Retired soldier honored with free home

PEARL RIVER COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Retired Army National Guard Sergeant-First Class Julie Barcheers received an early Mother's Day gift Thursday that she will likely never forget: The keys to a newly renovated mortgage-free home.

"Oh my God! Oh wow," Barcheers exclaimed as she took her first glimpse at her new home. "This is gorgeous. Look at the floors; it's awesome!"

Barcheers served our nation for two decades in the Navy and the Army National Guard. While she was deployed to Iraq in 2008, the now retired soldier suffered a traumatic brain injury when a rocket missile landed on base.

"Bank of America has a long tradition of serving those who serve us and serving the military. In August of 2012, Bank of America committed to giving a thousand properties to non-profit organizations and government groups that give houses to military veterans and first responders," explained Ted Longo.

Longo is with Merrill Lynch. He said even though there are no Bank of America branches in Mississippi, the company has committed to giving away 17 homes in the Magnolia State. This home in the Hide-A-Way Lake community in Pearl River County is one of them.

"Outside of my children and my grandchildren, this is the best day of my life," said Barcheers.

She's a single mom of four children and has 12 grandchildren. Her three bedroom/two bath home is equipped with the things needed to make living life easier with a disability.

"I can't say 'thank-you' enough to everybody," Barcheers said.

Part of Barcheers's face was paralyzed during the enemy attack, for which she received a Purple Heart. The house was donated to her by the Military Warriors Support Foundation in partnership with Bank of America.
