Drunken mother attempts to run over daughters in Jones County

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from Jones County Sheriff's Department

On Monday, May 5, 2014 Jones County Deputies were dispatched to the area of Pecan Grove Road and Ira G. Odom Road in reference to a one vehicle accident.  Upon arrival Lt. Chris Cline made contact with the owner of the vehicle involved.  The owner stated he was visiting the home of friends when their mother began to act irrational and attempted to assault them.  "We left walking West on Ira G. Odom towards Pecan Grove Road to get away from Melinda Crays the mother of the victims.  As they were walking, Crays took and drove his truck attempting to run over her daughters with it. The owner realized what Melinda Crays was attempting to do, took matters into his own hands and jumped into the driver's side window of the truck and gained control of the vehicle.  He was able to force the vehicle off the road before crashing into a tree on Ira G. Odom-Pecan Grove Road Intersection.  Crays fled the scene on foot returning back to her residence.

Lt. Cline located Melinda Crays at her residence who appeared to be intoxicated.  Crays had injuries to her face and head consistent with hitting a steering wheel.  She was transported by EmServ Ambulance to South Central Regional Medical Center where she received medical attention before being released.

The teenage daughters of Crays admitted their mother assaulted them when they got home from school.  Both teens admitted they left the scene because they feared for their safety.  The teens were picked up by their grandmother and both are safe.

Melinda Crays is facing two charges of Felony Domestic Violence/Aggravated Assault.

Jones County Justice Court Judge set bond her at $20,000.00.
