Abandoned 'Walking Dead Escape' masks for sale to benefit mentorship program

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The nearly 300 handmade masks that were created for the Walking Dead Escape that happened in April are now for sale. A portion of the money made from the mask sales will benefit the Louisiana International Film Festival and Mentorship Program (LIFF).

Diana Branton, Creative Director for Composite Effects (CFX) said the company that runs the Walking Dead Escape event, Skybound EXP, approached them for makeup work and 245 custom silicone masks and body parts for the participants. The CFX crew was happy to oblige.

"This is a labor of love by our 30 employed artists that worked overtime really, just to push this out in the last month and a half," Branton said.

These are no department store masks. Each one costs about $800. But at 4:00 p.m. on the day of the event, Branton says Skybound EXP backed out, asking to rent the masks for $3500 instead. The real scare is that there was never a written contract.

The masks will go on sale May 6, 2014.

Composite Effects (CFX) hopes to give LIFF a boost as they prepare for the second annual event that runs from May 8 through May 11. CFX has agreed to donate 50 percent of the proceeds to LIFF to support the mentorship program.

"We wanted to make something positive happen with the amazing masks that our artists created," Diana Branton, Creative Director of CFX, said. "Immediately, we thought of supporting LIFF, whose mission is close to our hearts."

The CFX sale to benefit LIFF, has two tiers:

- For $1,000, individuals will receive a mask of their chosen gender; an all access pass to LIFF (valued at $100); and have the option to attend one of the CFX-sponsored movies, Coherence or Cannibal, in costume with the CFX team.

- For $1,200, individuals will receive a mask of their chosen gender; an all access pass to LIFF (valued at $100); and have the option to attend one of the CFX-sponsored movies, Coherence or Cannibal, in costume with the CFX team. Additionally, the individual will also get to attend a dinner with the CFX team on Saturday, May 10, 2014.

To purchase one of the above tiers, go to http://compositeeffects.com/page_liff.php or call 225-756-7875.

Following the Film Festival the weekend of May 8-11, CFX will continue to sell these masks and donate 50 percent of the proceeds to LIFF. In addition to the masks, purchasers will receive a one-year membership to LIFF. Purchases from this sale are tax deductible and qualify for charitable giving.
