Meridian mayor fires police chief

MERIDIAN, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Meridian Mayor Percy Bland says he requested a letter of resignation from Police Chief James Lee Monday.

According to WTOK, the police chief hasn't submitted that letter, so the mayor has fired Lee.

Bland says there has been a "loss of confidence in his (Lee's) ability to lead the department."

He said the firing is not related to recent Equal Opportunity Officer findings against Lee for creating a hostile work environment.

WTOK says the mayor's remarks came after Tuesday's city council meeting.

In reaction, Ward 2 City Councilman Dustin Markham said he was shocked but supports the mayor if this action moves the city forward.

We are told that Assistant Chief Buck Roberts has been named Interim Police Chief.
