BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The city of Helena now has a way to quickly communicate with residents about emergency situations.

To date, about 7,000 people have signed up for Blackboard Connect but officials hope the remaining 11,000 residents will follow suit.

Officials will be able to send and track personalized voice messages to multiple phone numbers and email address within minutes. It will help prepare and respond in time sensitive situations, like severe weather.

"If they will visit the city's web page, CityofHelena.org, there is a link they'll be able to follow, they can enter their own accounts, they can enter up to 10 different emails, 10 different telephone numbers," Helena Police Lt. Brad Flynn.

Flynn says Blackboard Connect does not use any personal information for anything but alerting those who have signed up. Citizens can choose to receive text messages, a phone call or voice message. They can also choose from a variety of alerts ranging from weather to utility and public service reminders.

Flynn says the beauty of this system is quick manner in which they can send potentially life-saving information.
