SCOTT COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Mississippians continue to recover from severe weather that struck the state Monday. The storms claimed 14 lives statewide, with damage reported in 23 counties.

State officials say more than 12-hundred homes, and 87 businesses were destroyed or sustained major damage.

Multiple tornadoes were reported in Scott and Newton Counties.

Terry McMillan ran to his brother's home Monday after the tornado hit, but there wasn't much left.

"The walls standing now is the only thing that was standing then," said McMillan. "I found my sister in law here by the fireplace, fortunately she was on top of all the rubble, rather than being buried in it."

Gail McMillan was hospitalized with a cracked vertebrae. Her two daughters suffered minor injuries.

While they recover, their family continues to clean up the family chicken farm, that also took a direct hit. Nearly 8 thousand chickens killed, and multiple buildings destroyed.

"It's a wonder that any of them are alive. I'm just amazed," said McMillan.

The tornadoes moved east into Newton County, losing strength.

"We had no injuries in the county we were very fortunate," said Newton County EOC Director Seven Baggett. "No injuries no fatalities at all. Basically it went from one end of the county to the other."

Several residents on Country Club Drive suffered roof and structure damage. Four homes in all were destroyed here.

"Were picking up pieces trying to make sure everybody's ok, to get roofs covered as much as possible," said Baggett.

FEMA inspectors were in the area surveying the damage Friday, as residents continued to piece their lives back together.

"We've had a lot of storms in Mississippi, a lot of people have experienced this kind of damage," said McMillan. "We've been fortunate right in this part of Scott County over the years. This one hit close to home."

Van McMillan's family says he can take credit for saving his family. When he built his house, he put extra plywood in the walls to make them stronger.

Monday he also gathered his wife and daughters in a closet to keep them safe.
