5-year-old in critical condition after 18-wheeler crash

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

On Wednesday morning, our crew was on the scene of an accident on Highway 49 in Rankin County.

Mississippi Highway Patrol confirms that it was a 2 vehicle accident located at US 49 just south of Florence. An 18 wheeler was traveling southbound when it struck a 1999 Chevrolet Blazer that was overturned on its passenger side in the southbound lane.

MHP tells us that the driver of the Blazer has been identified as Henry Clemons, 28, from Dade City, Florida.

A 5 year old, identified as Davionte Clemons, was reportedly on the passenger side. We are told that he was ejected from the vehicle.

MHP says the 18 wheeler was driven by Leon Davis, 56. He drives for Falco Lime out of Vicksburg.

We are told the Blazer had just had an accident and was over turned in the roadway prior to the collision with the 18 wheeler.

The 18 wheeler reportedly came over a hilltop on Hwy 49 and was unable to avoid hitting the Blazer in the roadway. MHP is still investigating what caused the Blazer to have had the first initial accident.

Investigators still aren't sure if the child was ejected from the first initial accident or when  the vehicle was struck by the 18 wheeler.

Davis was transported to UMC with injuries.

The occupants of the Blazer were airlifted to UMC. We are told that the 5-year-old boy is in critical condition and Clemons is in stable condition at this time.

The accident is under investigation.
