MEMA warning of additional severe weather in Mississippi

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service ask residents to remain weather-aware with additional severe weather expected to move through the state this afternoon through mid-evening.

The National Weather Service forecast includes the threat of several modes of severe weather including tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, strong winds, heavy rain and flooding, large hail and dangerous lightning.

"Unfortunately this next round of severe weather will create additional risks and vulnerabilities for our residents" said MEMA Director Robert Latham. "Yesterday's tornadoes, heavy rain and strong winds have saturated soil in many areas and compromised many homes and structures.  This means there is an increased risk for additional damages from severe weather like tornadoes, thunderstorms or even high winds. It is critical that anyone assisting with cleanup efforts and who may be outside or away from any warning systems to have a way to receive severe weather updates.  All residents should know where they will go if a warning is issued for their area."

Much of the state is at risk for severe weather with an elevated and high risk from about the Natchez Trace down to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Residents should monitor their local media for any updated severe weather information.

Monday, Gov. Phil Bryant declared a State of Emergency Monday to make state resources available to assist affected areas.

MEMA urges the public to report damages to your local Emergency Management Agency.
