WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - An event this weekend will honor a woman who was dedicated to serving her community.

Yolanda Norwood suddenly passed away in December 2013.

She was the president of the Wilmington Chapter of the Links, a group that promotes volunteerism and social change.

Every year, Norwood passionately chaired the UN Walk to End Violence Against Women and Girls.

This year's walk will be in Norwood's memory.

It will be held on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Shelter #4 at Hugh MacRae Park.

The walk is aimed at raising awareness about violence against women and working to prevent it.

Statistics from the UN show 70 percent of women will be abused in their lifetime.
