Cam's day with the kids

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A big day for more than 700 8th grade students from 40 Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. They filled Memorial Stadium for a day of fun with none other than Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

For the second year, the Cam Newton Foundation has hosted School Pride Day. The children are chosen to participate because they have good grades, excellent attendance records, they are well behaved, and their teachers recommended them.

They spent the morning competing in athletic and academic challenges.

"I liked the tug of war," said one middle school student.

"I tried to hoola-hoop but it just wasn't working, it wasn't going around," said another.

For Cam, it was a day to unwind while spreading the mission of his foundation.

"My motto for this foundation is everyone matters and we're giving back in a great way today. Plus, there's so much these kids are giving back to me," Newton said.

It also gives him some perspective. Between practice in Charlotte, completing his classes in Auburn, and trips to Atlanta all week, Cam says he's trying to lead these kids by example.

"I'm trying to be my best on the field, trying to give back to my community, trying to be the best football player I can possibly be, as well as graduate. I don't want to be an imposter but how can I inspire these kids to go to school and finish and graduate if I'm not finished myself," Newton said.
