NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Two downtown window washers are safe and sound Friday after the scaffolding they were on gave out 40 stories high.

A spokesperson with the New Orleans Fire Department says around 9 a.m., the cables on the scaffolding snapped causing them men to dangle 40 stories above Common St at the Capital One Building. The pair were wearing safety harnesses that prevented them from falling.

The fire department, along with a glass contractor who was already doing some work in the building, made their way to the 40th floor and broke a window allowing the men to be pulled through safely.

The two men, George Gomez and Willis Everidge, say they were hanging from the side of the building for 20 minutes before rescue crews could get to them.

The two men were visiably shaken, but refused treatement from New Orleans Emergency Medical Services personnel.

Gomez and Everidge, who work for Acme Window Cleaning, say they will be back on the job first thing Monday morning.
