GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) -

Police arrested a man on Saturday in connection to a deadly hit-and-run in Gastonia.

The Gastonia Police Department said the pedestrian died nearly a week after he was hit by two vehicles while crossing the street.

Investigators say both drivers left the scene at East Long Avenue and Broad Street.

According to investigators, 53-year-old John Wayne King died at Carolinas Medical Center from his injuries.

Police arrested Jerry Kent Orrell, 31, from Belmont after he turned himself into law enforcement.

Police said he was driving a 1997 Ford Explorer when he allegedly hit King and officials found the car in the parking lot of Food Lion on Mount Holly Huntersville Road in Charlotte.

Orrell is charged with second degree murder, felony hit and run, driving while license revoked, and careless and reckless driving.

He is in the Gaston County Jail under a 500,000 dollar bond.

Police said they are still looking for the driver of the second vehicle.

According to a witness, King was walking in the crosswalk across the intersection when he was struck by a white sports utility vehicle followed by another sedan.

"Someone needs to come forward," King's sister, Lynn Hyde, told WBTV. "They can't do anything to bring him back, but they can at least come forward and admit what they did."

King's family is trying to cope with their loss.

"Johnny would do anything for you. He would give you the shirt off his back. He would not hurt anybody. This should not have happened," Hyde said.

Officer Quinn with Gastonia Police Department Traffic Enforcement Bureau is the lead investigator and can be reached at (704) 842-5168 or a message can be left through the Gastonia Police Department front desk staff at (704) 866-6702.
