KSLA News 12 Guest Editorial: April 24th-Providence House

Providence House is not closing even though we will no longer operate the domestic violence program. To say we are heartbroken about the decision is an understatement.

We believe that it is critical to have a domestic violence program located in Shreveport-Bossier, and a smooth transition of clients remains our highest priority. However, Providence House's core vision and mission will continue: Imagine a community where no family is homeless.

The singular aim of Providence House for 25 years is to break the cycle of homelessness by helping families with children gain the resources necessary to move permanently to independent living. We must remain strong and successful for the next 25 years. Homeless families are depending on us. Today, we are serving 80 families that include 171 children, a total of 255 people.

With funding and resources dwindling we must focus our time and attention on our core program and mission to break the homeless cycle for families with children. Ending family homelessness is possible but it will take long term solutions. It will take using our hearts and our heads.

What can you do to help? Continue to support providence house by giving of your time, talent, treasures and prayers! With god's help lives will continue to be transformed. Imagine a community where no family is homeless together it is possible.

I'm Simone Hennessee with Providence House.

Tonight at 11:59 p.m., KSLA's extended agreement with DirecTV will expire and they may drop this station from their lineup. We have been working hard to stay on their system, but they have simply refused to make a fair deal.

As we all witness the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, we are reminded of the responsibility of local broadcasters to serve those in need. And we're pleased DirecTV understood the importance of our local commitment and accepted Raycom Media's extension.
