Salvation Army volunteers recognized at appreciation banquet

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The Salvation Army has many wonderful volunteers. Thursday evening, those volunteers were honored and recognized.

"The Salvation Army for several years running, we're the most respected organization in the country. We cannot hold that reputation and that title without people volunteering and reaching out to help others," Salvation Army Major Gary Sturdivant said.

For the past two years, Vicki and J.W. Lawrence have been avid volunteers for the Salvation Army. They say since retiring from the education field, giving back to their community is what keeps them going.

"It's an opportunity to actually see people face to face and let them know that you really care," Vicki said.

Volunteer Coordinator and Grant Writer Zachary Rhodes said people like Vicki and J.W. make his job more enjoyable.

"The Salvation Army pretty much depends on these volunteers. We wouldn't be able to operate many of our programs without them," Rhodes said.

Attending the appreciation banquet in honor of volunteers, Vicki and J.W. are able to reflect on why they chose to be a part of something so special.

"Look at their face. Watch them smile, and that's what really helps. It's like Christmas all over again for ourselves when we give, and that's really important," J.W. said.

"The looks on their faces, that's the big thing, but actually we have a lot of fun just getting to know the people that are connected to the Salvation Army. They give so much and they work so hard, and they truly care. For them it's just not a job. It's an avocation as well as a vocation," Vicki added.
