Moss Point fights back against litter bugs with city cleanup

MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - Moss Point is fighting back against litter bugs that are trashing the city. The city is holding a city-wide clean up day Saturday to help keep Moss Point beautiful.

Mattie Holloway loves to see her neighborhood in Moss Point clean, and has always taken pride in helping it stay that way.

"I believe cleanliness is next to godliness," Holloway said.

Holloway said it is a shame some other areas around town are plagued with litter.

"I think it is awful, because we do live a beautiful place," said Holloway.

Mitch Ellerby and Kevin Raymond agree. They said while the litter problem is not as bad as it used to be in the city, there are still too many people throwing plastic cups, tires, TV's and even mattresses on the road for others to pick up.

"I don't understand this, and I never have fathomed why people would just throw it out and just discard," Raymond said.

"It has to stop. It is sad that we don't realize what we are doing to the environment," Ellerby said.

Mayor Billy Broomfield is now calling on residents of all ages to come together and take part in a city-wide cleanup Saturday to improve the look of Moss Point.

"I encourage all the citizens to be a part of this, and you will feel much better once you have done that, and you made the city look like the way it is supposed to look," Broomfield said. "Those people who visit for the very first time would see this is a very progressive and prosperous city."

These concerned citizens hope others in the community heed the call to action.

"Take the time to help each other and pickup litter. That would help out the city a lot. It is just not my property, but it is the community and the whole city," Holloway said.

The cleanup is Saturday in Moss Point from 8 a.m. to noon. Garbage bags and gloves will be available for volunteers at the Pumpkin-patch in the downtown district.
