Congressman Harper and former Senator Lott discuss telehealth technology

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

UMMC is on the cutting edge of technology that connects doctors with patients in rural areas.

Congressman Gregg Harper, Republican House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy and former Senator Trent Lott today discussed the role of telehealth technology and bringing together patients and healthcare providers.

Telehealth creates in-person exams with patients hundreds of miles away through live video conferencing and Bluetooth stethoscopes.

Congressman Harper has introduced legislation that would re-imburse doctors for the tele-conference patient visit.

"A physician can now really see more patients, provide more healthcare to more people when you're in a state that you do have a primary physician shortage, said Congressman Harper. "This is a way to address that."

"Just think how much difference it could make in lifestyle in being able to get access to physicians without having to drive from Sunflower County to Jackson, Mississippi," added former Senator Lott.

Currently physicians are only re-imbursed for in office visits.
