Port director optimistic Chiquita will renew lease

Posted: Updated:
GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The Port of Gulfport is awaiting word from Chiquita on whether that longtime tenant will renew its lease. The fresh fruit company has been one of the anchor companies at the port for decades.

Port Director Jonathan Daniels expects to know by May 15 whether Chiquita will renew the current lease, which is due to expire on July 15.

Daniels is optimistic that Gulfport can retain the business saying it is "cost effective" for Chiquita, with favorable fees and high productivity from the local longshoremen.

"Recent discussions, we've been told that this is Chiquita's most efficient operation in the United States. We certainly think that bodes very well not only for their operations, but that information also gets out to other shippers and carriers in the industry," Daniels told WLOX News in a recent interview.
