Fire forces families from apartments in Kansas City

Posted: Updated:
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Firefighters are investigating an early morning fire that left several families homeless at an apartment complex.

Battalion Chief James Garrett initially told KCTV5 News that they believed the fire was intentionally set, but investigators since determined that not to be the case.

Neighbors believe the fire started in a hallway inside the two-story apartment building.

Residents of the building near Minnie Street and Park Avenue say they woke up about 4:20 a.m. Tuesday to flames and the smell of smoke.

Domonique Tiger said he banged on his neighbors' doors to make sure everyone woke up and got out safely.

Neighbors say no one was injured.

"I don't have anything. It's gone. My clothes are burned. Everything I worked hard for. It hurts a lot," Tiger said.

Damage is estimated at about $17,000.

Members of the Red Cross are helping six adults and one child forced out by the fire.
