GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The Gulfport Admirals and the visiting Harrison Central Red Rebels went toe-to-toe, pitch-to-pitch Monday night at the Joe Sam Owen Baseball Complex.
Both teams were tied for the Region 7-6A lead with 8 wins and 5 losses, so the winner would lock-up first place and a first-round bye in the playoffs.
Chris Crosby went six innings for the Red Rebels (11-11) and gave up 3 runs on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts.
In the top of the sixth inning, Harrison Central had runners on first and second with one out. Admirals pitcher Ben Stiglets would get the second out on a bunt. He would toss to third base for the force out and the second out in the inning.
With Red Rebels on second and third, Stiglets would force a grounder and threw to first to get out of a jam.
In the bottom of the sixth inning Gulfport's Daniel Keating, a Southern Miss signee, singled into left field.
Admirals pitcher Ben Stiglets stepped up to the plate and he laid down a perfect bunt that loaded the bases with no outs.
Catcher Daniel Moody delivered the game winning hit, a blast into the gap in left centerfield, that plated three Admirals. Moody attempted to score but was tagged out at home plate.
Stiglets would go the distance and got the final out in the top of the seventh on a strikeout.
The junior pitcher tossed a shutout, giving up 3 hits with 8 strikeouts improving his record to 6-2.
Gulfport claimed the Region 7-6A District Championship and gets a first-round bye in the playoffs. Harrison Central tied Hancock for second place but the Hawks win the tiebreaker so Hancock will host Pearl Thursday night at 7:00 in game one of the best-of-three playoff series.
Harrison Central must travel to Brandon Thursday night after Monday's tough loss.
Biloxi defeated D'Iberville 1-0 Monday night at Biloxi High. The Indians (13-12) got the winning run off the bat of Darrell Montiforte, a walk off RBI double to right centerfield that scored Justin Hulett. Biloxi secured third place in the Region 8-6A ranks while D'Iberville (14-10) finished in second place behind Ocean Springs.
Mason Berkowitz got the win for the Indians.
