UT hires Donnie Tyndall as head men's basketball coach

KNOXVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Tennessee has found its next head men's basketball coach in former Middle Tennessee State University assistant coach Donnie Tyndall.

Tyndall called Tennessee a "special, special place" Tuesday as he was introduced as the Volunteers' new coach alongside athletic director Dave Hart.

Tyndall, who was most recently the head coach at Southern Mississippi, had a 56-17 record in two seasons at Southern Miss, including two appearances in the NIT.

His Golden Eagles reached the quarterfinals of last month's NIT before falling to eventual champion Minnesota.

Prior to Southern Miss, Tyndall guided Morehead State to a 114-84 record, which included an upset win over Louisville in the 2011 NCAA tournament.

Tyndall served four seasons as an assistant coach at MTSU.

He signed a six-year contract with Tennessee, paying him $1.6 million annually.

He replaces Cuonzo Martin, who recently left Tennessee to become the head coach at California after taking the Vols to the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA tournament.
