Win a house for $10 a chance

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Newly-remodeled houses for ten dollars? Call it an unusual way to sell houses, but one Jackson real estate agent says buying them, fixing them and raffling them off could be a sound business decision.

His venture starts with a three-bedroom home on Utah Street. For years, that house was an eyesore, with foliage several feet high.

The inside wasn't much better, according to owner Bobby Quinn.

"I really can't stand a house on the corner like this one is," said Quinn. "On the corner, you see it every which way you go, which way you come from." Quinn said. "That's why we chose this one first. Because it's just...it's terrible."

Months and months of remodeling later, the house has new brickwork, new paint jobs inside and out, and the possibility of a new owner. It's also available to anyone for $10 a chance.

However, some might question why Quinn went through all the work.

"There's a market for it, there's a need for it, and I'm not helpless," said Quinn. "We wanna see the community look better, so we're gonna take those entries, and we're gonna put it into the next project, and the next project and the next project."

Quinn says he needs to sell about six thousand newsletters, which include a chance to win the house, to break even.

Some might even wonder if a renovated house can change a neighborhood.   Quinn thinks so.   He says it can even help reduce crime.

"I'll take a guy coming down the street. He'll come up here saying, 'Man, man, man, I can do something.'  Mow the yard, then," Quinn said. "He doesn't have to steal a lawnmower, he don't have to break into anybody's house. He don't have to do anything. Come on, go to work. It was just a raggedy house, remember?"

It's not a raggedy house anymore, though. At the end of the day, it's one less blighted house in Jackson, but still a long way to go.

"If I raffle off a house a week from here forward, it'd still take 150 years to go through 8,000 vacant houses," said Quinn.

Whether or not this strategy takes off is another story. The drawing will be held on Mother's Day, May 11. If you'd like to try your luck at winning that house on Utah Street, you can do so by going to NuSouth Construction's office at 3247 Medgar Evers Boulevard, in the Delta Mart Shopping Center.
