MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - The Memphis Redbirds have a new general manager, and the big announcement came on Monday afternoon.

Craig Unger, a five-year veteran of the front office, will become the new general manager of the Memphis Redbirds.

Unger moved his family to Memphis to take the helm, after a five-year stint in sales and marketing for the Cardinals in St. Louis. He hopes to put the Cardinals' fingerprint on the team but still let the Memphis Redbirds spread their own wings.

The City of Memphis recently took over AutoZone Park. The Cards took over the Redbirds to try to boost ticket sales and oversee team operations for the Triple A minor league baseball feeder team for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals GM, John Mozeliak, came down from headquarters to make the announcement. Mozeliak says he wants a leader from the Cards to put their stamp on the Memphis operation.

"It's really my pleasure today to introduce to you Craig Unger," said Mozeliak. "We certainly want the Memphis Redbirds to have their own brand, their own identity, but there are some things we can do down here that replicate some things you see in St. Louis and Springfield, Missouri."

Unger talked about what he will do to promote the park.

"Some of it will be some marketing efforts this year of trying to get out the message of the Redbirds. The 15th anniversary of AutoZone Park and those things. A lot of it's going to be behind the scenes, and I think next year, when we roll out for the exhibition game in March, people are going to see big changes," he said.

Unger says he looks forward to helping to build up the organization and become part of the Memphis community. The Redbirds are the third minor league team owned by the Cardinals.

The new GM will meet with fans, season ticket holders, and sponsors over the coming months to help pack the stadium. In addition, Unger says it is about having an affordable, family-friendly park in the heart of downtown Memphis.
