Civitans hold egg hunt for kids with special needs

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

Saturday was a busy day for the Easter Bunny. But he made a special stop at the D'Iberville Town Green for the North Bay Civitan Club's 6th annual special needs Easter egg hunt.

Ten-year-old David Greig was one of the participants. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth, but his mom Lisa doesn't let his disability keep him from having fun.

"He will participate, yes, and he will have his sister helping him," said Lisa Greig.

David wasn't the only one getting a helping hand today. Although most of the children participating in the hunt were capable of grabbing up the eggs themselves, Christian's big brother Nathaniel wanted to help him out.

"He's my brother and I should always look out for him, and he's just fun and I always help him. He is just fun to be around," said Nathaniel.

The North Bay Civitan Club has sponsored the special needs hunt for six years, and this is the first year they have hosted it at the D'Iberville Town Green. The event still brought out a great crowd of eager children ready to participate in an activity designed especially for them.

"I think it's very important for the special needs community. So often the special needs children and families are, not intentionally, excluded," said Lisa Grieg.

Keith Wilson is the president of the North Bay Civitan Club. He has been organizing the annual event since the beginning, and says it still tugs at his heart strings every year.

"After doing this for six years now, it definitely warms the heart every time we do this kind of event, anything that helps our different populations in the community. That's what Civitan does," said Wilson.

The children were awarded prizes for most eggs collected, got to take pictures with the Easter Bunny, and ended the day with a free lunch.

The North Bay Civitan Club hosts civic events all year long, and even puts on a fashion show with Dillard's at Edgewater Mall featuring children with developmental disabilities as the models.
