The weather is returning to normal in South Mississippi after a late cool snap. The warmer weather also gives anglers an opportunity to do a little competitive fishing.
The Spraberry-Schankin Memorial Speckled Trout World Championship is slated for this weekend at The Dock Bar and Grill located on Gulfport Lake.
Although the event features four separate divisions in cobia, flounder and redfish, the big prize is the speckled trout category.
The entry fee is $75, which includes a T-shirt and fish fry. A mandatory captains meeting will be held at The Dock Bar and Grill on Thursday from 3-7 pm with fishing days set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The largest speckled trout will earn $5,000 cash and a free kids rodeo for 12 and under will be held on Saturday.
Second place speckled trout pays out $500 and third place will receive $250.
Any angler breaking the current state speckled trout record of 10-pounds, 10-ounces will also receive a 2014 Ford F-150 truck from Butch Oustalet Ford.
The largest Cobia will pay out $100 for first, $250 for second and $100 for third while flounder and redfish will each award $500 for first, $250 for second and $100 for third.
"We have over $10,000 in guaranteed cash prizes and $5,000 to the winning angler in the trout category," said tournament spokesman Johnny Rea. "All proceeds will go to the Dr. Chris Spraberry Endowment Fund at the University the University Medical Center and the Raymond Schankin Golden Eagles Scholarship Fund at the University of Southern Mississippi."
