A 39-year-old Crowley man has been charged with theft of crawfish and criminal trespassing, authorities said.

Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon said Jason Paul Mire was arrested Tuesday night after he was caught in a crawfish pond in the 2700 block of the Crowley Eunice Highway.

"(We have) been receiving numerous theft complaints from crawfish farmers throughout the parish," Melancon said Wednesday in a news release. "The punishment for theft of crawfish is up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $3,000."

Bond was set at $1,000.
