USM Dance Professor's Piece Goes to Washington DC

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The University of Southern Mississippi will send five dance students to Washington D.C. in early June to perform at the Kennedy Center. The piece to be performed, entitled "Beyond Him" was choreographed in the spring of 2013 by Meredith Early, assistant professor of dance at USM.

"It's amazing!" said Meredith Early. "I still can't believe it sometimes. I'm so proud of the work of the students and to represent the department in such a way that will bring attention to USM Dance and to continue to bring focus to the high quality of work that we do here."

The piece was inspired when Early decided to see how her movement vocabulary looked on an all-male cast. She described her style as a collection of "weird, quirky movments with a strong technical foundation."

The piece was chosen by a panel of professionals and will be one of two dances featured from the region. The selection is an incredible honor.
