BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Southern Miss traveled to Metairie and battled 8th ranked LSU at Zephyr Field in the Wally Pontiff Baseball Classic. The Golden Eagles tied the game at 3 on a three run homer off the bat of Hester, Louisiana native Austin Roussel in the top of the second. Roussel drove in a career-high four runs.
The Golden Eagles (21-17) would give up a season-high tying 13 runs and 15 hits.
LSU (28-9-1) had a number of players step up to the plate and delivered key hits in the victory over Southern Miss. Christian Ibarra had four RBI, Andrew Stevenson had four hits and drove in a pair of runs along with Mark Laird and Alex Bregman.
Henri Faucheux earned the victory by retiring all four batters he faced picking up his third win of the season against no defeats. He was the third of seven LSU pitchers used on the cold night.
Jake Winston suffered the loss after giving up five runs on five hits, two walks and two strikeouts over 1 1/3 innings dropping to 3-3 on the season.
Southern Miss entertains Louisiana Tech beginning Friday night at 6 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
LSU travels to Oxford facing the 13th ranked Ole Miss Rebels beginning Thursday night for a crucial SEC West Division three-game series.
The 24th ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs popped Alcorn State 16-2 Tuesday night at Dudy Noble Field.
The (23-15) Bulldogs exploded with seven runs in the eight inning. Mississippi State ended the night with 13 hits. Alex Detz banged out three hits and four RBIs. Cody Brown of Biloxi drove in two runs while Wes Rea of Gulfport had two hits.
"It was a good night for our baseball team,"Mississippi State head coach John Cohen said. "I thought we had some good at-bats and made some things happen on the bases. On the mound, we had some pitchers throw strikes and they gave us a chance to have success."
Austin Sexton (2-0) earned the win. In 4 2/3 innings Sexton gave up three-hits and no runs.
The Bulldogs jump back into SEC play on the road at Missouri Friday night beginning at 6:00.
