CENTER GROVE, MS (WBRC) -

A new development has emerged in the case of Cason Park, a 25-year-old Marine from Gordo who was hit and killed by a car on Sunday.

A family friend of Cason Park says they were made aware on Tuesday night that someone turned themselves in to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

The family friend identifies the person of interest as a 19-year-old male. She says there is no indication this person is charged with any crime at this point.

Sgt. Criss Turnipseed with the Mississippi Highway Patrol confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that they are interviewing a person of interest, but they have not filed any charges.

They are waiting on autopsy results, evidence that's being analyzed in the crime lab and further investigation, Turnipseed said.

"Due to the nature of this case we can not move only on statements and hearsay. Analyzing evidence is key and that takes a little time," Turnipseed said.

Troopers say 25-year-old Cason Park was struck and killed around 4 a.m. April 13 on U.S. 82 near Center Grove, Miss. They say Park was driving westbound when his car broke down. He left it with the hazard lights on and started walking west.

Troopers believe Park was struck from behind and it's likely the person knew what happened because Park's backpack and clothes were scattered along the highway.

Investigators are searching from a silver vehicle with damage to the front left and left side. The windshield may also be damaged.

Park's father, Butch, spoke to WCBI in Columbus, Miss.

"We'd like to know. It would give it closure because it's wrong," Park said. "And it's not how you treat a human."

Robin Edgeworth knew Park for 20 years. She was his next door neighbor. Edgeworth says Park had big heart.

"He was very active in our community, very active in sports. One thing you could never do around Cason was to kill an insect or try to harm any kind of animal. He was a big lover of our animals. He was always a protector of that," Edgeworth said.

Park's community is still trying to come to grips over why this happened.

"We do hope that whoever did this will come forward. More to give comfort to the family of just knowing what happened," Edgeworth said. "And a little more closure that could occur with finding out who did this."

Visitation for Cason will be Thursday, April 17 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in Gordo at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. Park's funeral will be held at 2 p.m. We're told the funeral is open to the public.

Anyone with information in the case should call troopers in Starkville, Miss. at 662-323-5314 or leave an anonymous tip with CrimeStoppers at 1-800-530-7151.
