Inmate work crew suspended pending MDOC investigation

HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A Harrison County inmate work crew has been suspended while Mississippi Department of Corrections officials investigate whether the crew was misused.

A complaint was filed April 10 with MDOC questioning why inmates were being used to erect a tent at for a wedding at the Great Southern Golf Course.

MDOC Communications Director Grace Fisher said it's standard procedure when a complaint is filed to suspend the work crew until the review is complete.

"A written plan of action will be requested from the Harrison County supervisor. The crew may or may not be reinstated pending a review of the action plan," Fisher said.

MDOC currently has 17 community work centers statewide, and each houses around 100 inmates. According to the MDOC website, "they routinely perform work for cities, counties, state agencies and charitable organizations as defined by 501(c)3."
