COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Thirty years before he allegedly gunned down three people at two Jewish centers in Kansas City in a story that made national headlines, suspect Glen Miller led a Ku Klux Klan rally in Lexington County.

Miller held the rally at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

Law enforcement officers from SLED, the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, and the FBI were on hand to patrol the rally.

Miller, dressed in military fatigues, addressed the crowd and the large contingent of law enforcement officials.

"You see all these police officers out here, you'd think we were in Russia or something," said Miller. "In other words, they stick their foot on your head and push it back down when you try to rise up in these communist countries and it's becoming the same way in our country today when white people try to rise up and organize."

Officials estimated the rally had just around 100 attendees.

Miller was then a North Carolina resident and one of the leaders of the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. He was also a failed gubernatorial candidate for governor in North Carolina.

In an interview with Wilmington-based WECT back in 1984, Miller claimed that segregation was necessary for the future of the country.

"The white race is being systematically destroyed," said Miller. "In 1950. the white race was 90 percent of this country. Today we are 65 percent and dropping fast. In a few years, by the turn of the century, or a little after we will be a minority here in our own land and we're not going to accept that."

Miller, who now goes by the name Frazier Glenn Cross, Jr., stands accused of gunning down a 14-year-old, his 69-year-old grandfather, and a third person.

Miller is facing a capital murder charge and a premeditated first-degree murder charge. Federal prosecutors are anticipating filing hate crime charges. The death penalty could also be sought.
