Posted: Updated:

The Stone County man who was killed Monday after exchanging fire with a Sheriff's deputy has been identified. Stone County Coroner Wayne Flurry said William Peyton Ayers, 46, died as a result of gunshot wounds to his chest and torso area.

Sheriff Mike Farmer said a deputy was called to a home on Magnolia Road on Monday afternoon because a man, later identified as Ayers, was threatening to kill himself with a gun.

Farmer said Ayers was shot after he fired shots at the deputy.

Farmer said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations and Highway Patrol are investigating.

Officials say the deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
