Smiths Station elementary students donate hair for cancer patients

SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) -

Many students at East Smiths Station Elementary and West Smiths Station Elementary in Lee County now have a new hair style, all benefiting a good cause.

Students, teachers, and parents donated hair to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Program, which gives hair to female cancer patients.

One young girl at East Smiths Station Elementary got the idea when she learned one of the teachers at the school has cancer.

The students who participated at West Smiths Station Elementary are Annesley Patterson, Maggie Estes, Faith Brannon, Macy Schulte, Skye Vogal, Ansley Flournoy, Skylar Webb and Jaden Boyd.

West Smiths Station Elementary teachers Kathy Henderson, Brittney Meador, Rachel Abbott, Jennifer McClaine, Emily Holland, Kim Blankenship, Melissa Golden, Jessica Morgan, and parent Carmen Estes also donated hair.

The donors at East Smiths Station Elementary are Olivia Ligon, Arly Parker, Emma Carroll, Andee Jamieson, Penelope Rodriguez, Cadence Joyner, Michelle Wilson, Kaleigh Mazzola's aunts, Brooke Hoffman, Kris Napier, Sydney Spain, Madison Spain, Ashleigh Schneider, Hannah-Raygan Byrd, teacher Katie Doughtery, junior high student Katelyn Alexander, Charlotte Jacobs from Wacoochee, Ashley Dell from Wacoochee, Kristi Renfroe (from WEST), Caedence Vollmer, Katie Mae Pittman, Abi King, Savanna Holbrooks, Kate Whitlock, McKenzie Lester, Alexis Davis, Kelsey Lester, Gracie Mathis, Griffin Montroy's grandmother, Shannyn Maddox, Sophie Ricks, Anthony Beesley's mom, Sadie Topolosky, Yesenia Ortiz, MacKenzie Astin from Wacoochee, teacher Heather Smith, teacher Melody Poole, Leslie Britton, Rita Davis, Sherry Beesley, Julie Ransom, and Christy Ganus.


Several local hairstylists were there as well, including Tricia Nicholson and Taylor Walls from Persnickety Salon, Wyndall Rentz and Kristin Terstrip from Salon Bellage, Leslie Coggins from Katherine's Hair Studio, and Gabriella Forsythe from L-N-S Hair Salon.

    Gulfport's Mayor and Chief Administrator say Fire Chief Michael Beyerstedt has their full confidence, and they've closed the book on an altercation two months ago between the chief and a firefighter. Now, a recently retired firefighter who says he witnessed the altercation has come forward not only to share his perspective of the incident but also on what he calls a serious need to hire more firefighters.
