PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

A Pascagoula woman will serve 20 years in prison after she pleaded guilty to two counts of felony child abuse on Friday. Shetara Millender, 27, was accused of forcing hot liquid into the mouth of a 10-year-old and also fracturing the victim's leg in 2011.

"It is hard to believe someone would treat a child the way this child was treated, especially by that child's guardian," said District Attorney Tony Lawrence. "I think the sentence of the court shows child abuse cannot and will not be tolerated in a civilized society."

Judge Dale Harkey sentenced Millender to 20 years in prison followed by 40 years of probation. She must also pay $2,000 in fines and $1,000 to the Mississippi Children's Trust Fund.

As Ja-Naya Thompson's short life was celebrated, there were a lot of tears and hugs as hundreds of people paid their respects during the visitation and the funeral service.
