USM President to address Gulf Park concerns during meeting

Posted: Updated:
LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) -

Students at the USM Gulf Park campus have some concerns they want addressed by the university's president. The student government association started a petition, and sent it to USM President Dr. Rodney Bennett just last week.

Students at the Gulf Park campus say they want to be treated the same as students who attend the main campus in Hattiesburg.

For example, they would like to see a health center and student recreational facility built, as well as more class options.

"Students are really frustrated with the fact that we pay the same amount of tuition as our Hattiesburg peers, yet we don't receive the same amount of resources," said SGA President LaQuita Grisham.

We were able to speak with President Bennett who tells us those students in Long Beach and Hattiesburg pay the same fees, however they are allocated differently based on the needs of the campus you attend.

Bennett was named President of USM on April 1, 2013. Since being in this new role, he has made some organizational changes.

These plans have faculty, staff and students concerned, and they are expecting him to address all of these issues during a meeting on Friday.

Students say they are also expecting Bennett to address their concerns as well. The meeting will be Friday, April 11, at 3:00 p.m. at the Fleming Education Center Auditorium.
