Several animals seized in Lucedale hoarding case

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Humane Society of the United States and the Southern Pines Animal Shelter teamed up Tuesday to rescue several animals from a home in Lucedale.

Twenty-one dogs, a rabbit and several cows and goats were found on the property living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions and several dead animals were also found. Lydia Sattler, State Director for Humane Society of the United States, says she was alerted to the situation by the Lucedale Police Department. Sattler says cases like this are no longer socially or morally acceptable and she's happy law enforcement is stepping up to prosecute those who commit acts of animal cruelty.

The dogs seized from the property were taken to the Southern Pines Animal Shelter where they will be put up for adoption.

"The dogs are in fairly good condition," said Katherine Sammons, Operations Manager, SPAS. "A lot of them are not socialized so we need to work on getting them used to being handled by people."

Sammons said there are a lot of small breed dogs, mostly Dachshunds, so she feels like once they work with them their chances of getting adopted will be very good.

The owner of the property is facing animal cruelty charges.
