Gulfport school leaders seek $41M bond for new high school

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Gulfport school leaders want to build a new high school. Monday, the Gulfport School District Board of Trustees approved a resolution to seek a $41 million bond issue for construction. Voters will get to have their say during a bond election May 27, sponsored by the Gulfport School District.

The current Gulfport High School was built in 1965. The current plan is to remove the oldest, outdated facilities to make way for new construction. Multiple entrances would be replaced with just four monitored entryways.

According to school leaders, improvements will include the expansion of the fine arts department, construction of modern science labs, a redesigned media and technology center, building of three two- story academic institute multipurpose spaces, and redesigning physical education and athletic venues.

The new design also provides added green space in the form of courtyards and an outdoor amphitheater.

A news conference will be held Tuesday morning where school leaders will reveal more details about the plan, and WLOX News will be there.
